ONCE babies are able to sit up without support, you may think they’re sitting pretty—and safely. Think again. Early sitters can topple over without warring. Don’t ever leave them alone in a sitting position or sit them on high surfaces without a supportive hand.
As babies learn to pick up small objects, anything within their reach may end up in their months. And that can lead to chocking or poisoning. Always do a sweep of the area where baby is playing and remove any small objects lying around. This means no older children’s Lego pieces or Barbie shoes, no coins or buttons, no hard candy or god kibble—nothing toxic or small enough for baby to choke on.
SURE, baby’s pulling-up trick is cute, but it can also be dangerous if you’re not careful. You and the parents will have to do some adjusting. Watch out for unsturdy furniture and items on shelves that the baby can reach.
ONCE baby has mastered pulling up, cruising can’t be far behind. To make sure she isn’t cruising for a bruising, check all the furniture that she’ll be pulling up on and holding on to and make sure it’s stable. Don’t let baby hang on to open dresser drawers, tables with sharp edges, swinging doors or chairs that can swivel, rock or topple over.
WHEN baby reaches for something she shouldn’t touch ( whether it’s a breakable dish or a hot stove), say firmly, “ No, don’t touch that.” IF it shouldn’t be touched because it belongs to someone else, say so: “Don’t touch that. That’s Daddy’s book.” If it shouldn’t be touched because it’s dangerous, say so, too: “Don’t touch. That’s hot. Ouch!” Then give baby something of his own to touch: “This is Justin’s toy” or “This is Madison’s Juice.”
Even if there’s a gate at the top and bottom of stairs in the home, baby will still need (and want) to learn to scale the steps. Show him how to climb up and how to come down (tummy down, feet first). Continue to supervise climbing (and keep gates up), even when he becomes a pro.
KIDS love to play in the water. Some love it so much that they’ll try to jump in at the sight of a full bath, a pool or a pond. But babies can drown in even a couple of inches of water, hold baby firmly back and say, “Wait for a grown-up.” |
